Empire/ honors/ beauty/, knowing/ beauty, Xi Shi/ laundress/ lakeside/, humbly/ remains? Taken/ Lauded/ raised/, North Palace/ lady; pampered/ powdered/ carried/, adorned/ ornament Girl friends/ lost/ left/, low caste/ restrains, Loneliness/ Xi Shi/ unseen/, lost friends/ envy. Mimic/ preening/ hoping/, day dreams/ misspent. Translated from Wang Wei’s “The Beautiful Xi Shi” this is an attempt to capture the flavor of the Chinese Language in an English format. The words between the slashes would be characters, thoughts complete. The punctuation is to aid in the English reader and would be tonal markers in the Chinese. Gloom |

This is marvelous, Professor. You've taken the delicacy of the Chinese thought, and have translated them into something even we Westerners can understand...understated beauty of the damned...Thank you... |

If one could be so beautiful, should she abandon all, when raised from humble to exalted? And could you ever be blinded to wisdom, by the beauty of another? ..my question to the Professor.. My take on the "The Beautiful XI SHI" |
