A Day In July

Walking to the end of Crystal Pier,
past stray fishermen and opportunist gulls,
we stand, hand-in-hand
beneath a canopy of blue;
a reunion to toast friendship.

To the north, grand houses on cliffs,
where privileged folk are caught
between the sea’s eroding face
and angry youths -
locals who claim this beach,
surfing onto private spits of sand,
pissing on precious patches of lawn.

To the south, even the people rust
in the constant spray,
living in dollhouses stacked three high;
a mad crush to own a piece of paradise.

Statues of crumbling tiki gods and pelicans -
sentries to outdoor bars;
the strand is littered in oiled bodies,
while the homeless, the only ones clothed,
clamor for coins.

Beyond the pier,
three dolphins put on a show of graceful arcs,
smile and wink,
then sail south toward Mexico.

Golden flecks sparkle on cresting waves,
their iridescent crashes capture us
into a soft lull, the light of existence.

We stare in wonder, at this moment,
at each other, at our own strange love,
and covet what can never be ours.

Corinne

Beautiful imagery ...perfect ending, though sad.  I always enjoy your writing.

(sigh) This is sooooooo beautiful with a tinge of sadness, sweet friend, my heart goes out to you and the thought of something you can never have, but I also smiled throughout the rest of the poem imagining the sun and the dolphins happily leaping and all! (kiss on cheek) This is another wonderful and sunny write, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Corinne, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton
