Come Out to Sea

In haze and damp of mystic dawn
In blindness of a cloud
A voice of distant ages gone
Calls out through foggy shroud

Come out, come out to sea once more
Through billows of the mist
Sail out from Cape Cod’s sandy shore
On mornings such as this

Skim o’er the crest of waters deep
In dawn’s obcurity
And join the crew of centuries gone
And one the likes of me

I’ll take you on a phantom trip
Through puffs of misty white
No fear you’ll have on whaling ship
That needs no beacon’s light

This voice that echoed through the haze
Came from a church yard’s tomb
Of one who sailed through foggy maze
Into the clouds of doom

Come out into the steamy mist
I’ll sail you to a dream
To where the brave sail straight and sure
Without a lighthouse beam

Come out upon my silver yacht
For you, there’s always room
Beside his grave an empty plot
A space for one more tomb

An old New England tale, you say
From rumors spun and spawned
From words that float from out the haze
And whisper in the dawn

Color me stunned...Liz, this is wonderful poetry woven into a hauntingly beautiful piece of folklore surrounding those who live by the sea. This one gives chills....

Beautiful writing, my friend

Elizabeth this is so wonderful and haunting.
I do wish I could go to the Cape...
Perhaps a bit of inspire would engulf me.
You do this so beautifully well.
Enjoyed the read this evening.

I was a fleet sailor for twenty years. The sea is a demanding mistress. She can calm your soul or take your life if you take her for granite.

I just ran across this poem and it is truly exceptional. Living in MA and spending many summers on the Cape, you have captured the essence of Old Cape Cod and the stories of the sea. I am extremely impressed.  Hugs, Marti

Well look at you still sailing on the sea!  This was a lovely piece Elizabeth, and I was about due for my mind to drift back to Cape Cod, so thank you for taking me there Miss you.
