“I don’t keep any food here.” She said
“but we can to the lower house and I’ll fix breakfast.”

She finished dressing
I rinsed the cups and the coffee pot
Turning them upside down
On the drainer

I felt her behind me
Before I heard her
And was reminded of
The way in a storm
The hair on the back of your neck
Would stand up
Just before lightning strikes.

I might have made different choices
If she hadn’t touched me.

We bumped our way down the rock-rutted track
And stopped at the side of the house where
She bailed out with a swing of the squeaky truck door
Hollering at me over her shoulder
to bring my stuff inside
While she fixed us something to eat.

I laughed at her, called her Bossy,
And turned to untie the tarp flung over my gear
When I heard the truck coming.

“Davis” I said to myself
and stepped around the back of the truck
where he couldn’t see me.

She met him on the porch
Took something from him
And kissed his cheek,
Then looked nervously towards me.

His old truck rattled back the way it came
And I figured I best leave the gear where it was for now.
So, I  headed for the front door where she was standing
Tears on her cheeks, reading what looked like a letter.

“Travis” she said without looking at me
“I’ve got to know something.”

Not at all sure what she would need to know from me
I simply asked “What?”

“Iambe.” She began, “ She still take you back if you went?”

“Not sure.” I answered, “Know I am not interested in finding out.”

“Why?” she asked

“Well, Lacey, I spent a long time learning to live with her and
all that time was spent torn up inside.”   I started as I tried
to say all the things wrapped up around inside me.

“ It wasn’t until recently I understood how I had shut off feeling things,
just to keep from cracking all crinkled inside.”

“Why?” I asked her not sure if I wanted to know.

“Davis,” she whispered with a half turned face,
“He wants me back.”

“Well, Lacey.” I sighed with a gut dropping sink of heart,
“I guess what matters is what you want.”

“You know, you got a piece of me tied up in knots,
and I’m not sure I know how to hurt like I’m starting to,
but you got to be happy, and you got to be doing what’s best
for Lacey.”

I bent over,kissed her cheek,
And asked if she was still hungry.

I knew I wasn’t
And found myself
Fingering the .45 cartridge in my pocket
Wondering if the names she etched in there
Would ever rub off.

..."all that time was spent torn up inside..."

also would have quoted what the others have already.

Makes one curious if she'd really choose to go back to Davis if Travis had decided to continue to move on in life....(or, backwards)

Lovely love story.....enjoying greatly.
