“ABOUT SHOOFLY JUNCTION” by Bill Charles ~~~~ Mom ended up down in that place years ago it seems, a small town in the hills of West Virginia on the Kanawha River kept alive by coal mining, once booming then busted, then not bad again it seems, but it’s really not even a town, just a place with some good memories surrounded by those there mines dug in the mountains full of coal, and the people that made a living digging it… The railroad tracks run right through town and across the dirt road from mom’s place, well when those big locomotives go on by the whole place does the rock and roll it seems, why I came home from the Navy and one night when I was sleeping, before I was use to that god awful racket, here came that train in the middle of the night and about scared the be yahoo out of me, why I was raised out of my bed and just about hit my head on the ceiling… Once my brother and I started buying junk cars and selling the parts, hey we had to eat, we did well until mom was tired of all the junk in her back yard, but we sold a lot of parts for a while until she said was going into the junk business for herself with our parts, well that ended that little excursion of ours… With coal mining booming, there were a lot of people in the area and some of the prettiest and cute little ladies one could imagine, well I thought I would just say that, I mean I never got into any kinda trouble, you know what I mean, especially at the dances in the small bars that dotted the area, why Dorsal and I, he’s my step dad, use to go out and tip a few once in a while, but that’s another story from the little place known as Shoofly Junction… ~~~~ |
