Thinking, time then was not really my ally. Hours were viscose long-lasting abominations. Some imaginary ropes, slip-knotted Around each spiked parting, escaping loyalties. I lay like a toy on the hearth, As absence burnt, and slotted at my arms, To fit missing endearments, on a gory set. Surrounded by seconds of your making, Your fascinations and your little icons, At every faceted eye, your part and parcel! Ground to my chest, the nearest I'd get. All of our parlour was you, the acoustic reclining by a bare scratched door, Sprawling memorabilia rising, with no seeming stop And cigarettes near abolished By my constant crushing and unnerving upheaval. My need to have you apart from the unkempt, Divided like mine. Compulsed to meet your arrival. A cameo part you would play for my progress. My own hurting? beside your experience- Heat age for the summer, you had youth to waste! Still you left it in passing, with a captive's reserve. To endure it a night and chalk haste a reminder. Understanding to live and to end the rehearsal. In the thick glut of applause, from my smile. You coaxed from my ruins- in your fashion. My dependence shook on your slat-skinny-shoulders, Strangling and filmy-limbed, a baby-bat. Across your back in darkness of my own creating. You demanded it daily, but I would negate it- My last gift to you was my smile, and you took it. When the curtain had folded, you kept it remember? Smiling is now what I do not do. Time is now a friend, but not as permissive. The dark that was hatched, the seconds and the missing. Are not by your will, or by my trial permitting. Recall my appeal, in the silence unscored, Still you have my last smile. Keep it whole now, it's yours. |
