Riding With Angels

I work with him some days;
a boy a year or two ago
and now a man, but young
enough to be a son.
The proof of this:
On these, the street days,
he will bring his girl along.
She's with him here today,
an angel in a white tee shirt;
She must be that, who but an angel
would be riding in a truck for this,
two men out pulling manholes,
dropping probes and loading data.
Angel, or a girl in love,
the difference meaningless,
and riding with him now.
She's writing notes today,
maybe a course she's taking,
and I think she'll be a nurse;
She has the eyes for it.
A little shy with me of course,
and though she never watches him,
her nurse's eyes know where he is.
One thing she doesn't know:
that when he's working near,
fetching the probes, perhaps
downloading in the cab,
one hand, her left, strays up
to touch her hair. Does she
or else the hand recall
his touch, some private moment,
stray caress along her cheek,
and call it back? I hope it's so.
I know that gesture well, because
I've seen it too. My truck is empty now
but there were times, back in the years
when I was blessed by this;
the times an angel rode with me.

Ed...there are many angels around...not all are lucky enough to recognize them.  This is a lovely story.

Well, I must confess, I became somewhat perplexed as I read this. I do not believe that he and I have ever met, even though I am a nurse, an "angel" and as I write this reply, I am wearing a white T-shirt!

EA -- and your eyes? I bet they have a certain look. I asked Rich today, and sure enough, a nurse.

Martie -- I do think I'd know -- this happened yesterday, and my truck was definitely empty...no angels for me...

Back for an edit so soon...Of course I'm going to give her this next time I see her...that'll get me either punched, slapped or hugged....worth the gamble, I think...

the angellic title drew me, i have this strange obsession with all things angellic!

i really do like the content however- i've read it twice now, nurses eyes is such a meaty and explainatory metaphor

this is sweet.. I'd say someone wasn't focusing on work though
I was always told I should be a nurse (until I passed out from that book "where the red fern grows" when that kid was killed, and threw up all over my desk and the teacher had to quit reading it). But this just makes me smile as this saturday I leave to see my boyfriend of 11 months, it'll be the first time .. I can see his eyes ok ok so I'm on a cloud, but its a real one! yay!

Always, Alyssa

Ed, this is so sweet and tender. I could see the whole scene as I was reading. You know, it really should be in the book. Let us know, okay?

Ed...when I read your words, I am transported from this dull dining room into whatever story you are telling at the time, there's much to be said for that. As a nurse, I have to wonder what that look that nurses have in their eyes are though
Perhaps the look of the devil at times...lol.

This touch of sad recall is the perfect ending for a wonderfully told story. *S* How is it that we don't miss things from our lives until we see others living the newness, the appreciation, the togetherness? *S* Excellent write! *S*
