My mind tells me
it must be a dream
but sad it appears
I know it reality

For in place of
flesh and bone
I have fondly come
to know
a square foot of drab carpeting
lies where
the body once was
between my head and toes
in grand final insult
embroidered upon my face
the letters
W-E-L-C-O-M-E
stand out
clear as day.

Like a stampede of deformed bovines
I see them come
rushing
rushing
in and out
leaving dirty footprints everyone

From large ugly women
in ten inch heels
to lanky loafer clad salesman
each feeling the need
to take their turn
"well lets not dirty the house
with mud and such
for what other purpose
does this mat here lie?"

"What Purpose indeed!"
I grumble
muffled beneath fabric mouth
as yet another muddy shoe
plants itself on my carpet brow

After many days and nights
of comings and goings
loafers, heels, boots and smelly
disgusting and filthy
my usefulness comes to an end

So off
to the store
the owner skips with glee
to find another poor mat
just like me.

Had to read this twice to get it.  Sorry it's Monday..but wow..I loved it.  It's not fun being a doormat for sure...but doesn't a doormat have to lay down and take it?

Brad,

The grin on my face is only because you captured the feeling so well.

Enjoyed this perspective.

I loved the view from this. It's a favored exercize of mine as well, to take an aninimate object and have it speak for my metaphor.

Well done, me friend!

Dan,

Seriously, can you redo this on reflections for submission?
