Though I belong to no church, I find myself contemplating spending time with some nearby Trappists. Those that know me, don’t find this……….extraordinary

Can a man
Who possesses
No religiosity
But, has ever attempted
To acquire spirituality
Come away from
Trappist trappings
Any richer?

Can a man
Who prides himself
On his vocabulary
But has never
Actually said anything
Come away from
Cistercian silence
With the ability
To speak?

And finally,

Can a man
Who has lately lived
Lacking creature comfort
And certainly wanting
For any comfort creature
Come away from
A monastic retreat
Any less austere?

Ed - ok I may be off but here goes:

(forgive me if I am off - correct me if I am please)

the first:  yes - you already are rich

the second:  more insightful (if that is possible with you lol)

third: an enigma only you will resolve by looking within

Have me thinkin here always - this is amazing xxoo

(I always found monks kinda sexy m'self.)

I think it has to do with artistry, and the self being the ultimate canvas.

and nothing about your gentle grace surprises me.

You have the wisdom of discernment m'friend.

I came back to say...I was a little shy about saying everything I wanted to say about this. I am awkward about such things, as ya know. But I think often, about the need to put back, what we take out.

(GIGO--Garbage In--Garbage Out)

I say often, that even Jesus the Christed, took time away from his chosen apostles to pray, meditate, and renew. How can we of such simple understanding choose less?

I use the analogy of a battery often---that we must emit and receive in constancy, and it is when we fail to achieve this that causes our imbalances....

and yes, it is cliche' by now to cite that the word "atonement" means "at-one-ment"--
and disease can be equated with un-ease...

but even if all of the above philosophies are incorrect? At least I have the option to choose to die happy....

and oooh, ya make me dig deep m'yeti....

love you.

Ed this reminds me of Hesse's Siddhartha, where the protaganist leaves hinduism when he no longer finds solace in it, he joins ascetics in the forest until again it no longer suits him, he turns his back on spirituality to emerse himself in material to see if that would make him happy it does not, he even walks with the buddha himself but again finds no solace. Buddha, Jesus etc..they had to create their own paths when following no longer suited them.

Wranx--To question is a good thing...and there are many paths to self discovery..and they all lead to some place else.  The way of your thinking refreshes my tired mind.

Thanks Ron. And I coulda guessed.

Karen, my witch. thank you and thank you.
The worst case, is plenty of "Trappist" beer and....uh...fruitcake.

Raff? If I'd known that someone already walked this path, I'd have saved some time.
Sheesh.

Not a riddle, Sue. At least, not for anyone but me. Oops! Maybe it is.

Marti, The reason for this, would be for that kind of refreshment. Plus the beer and fruitcake.
