I'm nervous for college. Today is wednesday and tuition is due on friday. Mom is trying to make ends meet. I didn't qualify for fedeal loans or grants. My dad won't help any either. He seems to not be able to afford it either and I am not allowed to hold a job during school. So I can't do much to help either. I am worried because I don't want my mom to have to sacrifice so much for me. she already has.. what can I do? |

Could you apply for a deadline extension possibly? My school lets you do that if you have extreme circumstances (like yours). In the meantime you might want to check the newspaper classifieds to see if there's any way you can make a hundred dollars or so in a really short time. You might be able to find some place that does product testing and needs guinea pigs, for example... those are good if you need some quick cash. Or maybe a focus group of some kind, in your area? You might also consider applying for a credit card, which is a bit easier to get ahold of than a federal grant, or a bank loan. Those kinds of things will cost you in the long run but they're good for meeting deadlines. I don't really know how these things work in the states, so some of my suggestions might be a bit impractical. Your mother might be able to pull out some money temporarily that you'd have more time to reimburse her for, if she has a credit card or anything of the sort. Good luck with everything, though. I know how you feel, seeing as I'm saving up for my tuition as well and only have a couple of months to scrape something together. "God becomes as we are that we may be as he is." ~William Blake |

Kellie, You won't get better advice than from LP. I say you run with it. Hope things work out. If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

LP, Thanks for your suggestions.. You are right. I thought I hadd exhausted my resources. I went in and asked the counselor about an extention and we came up with a payment plan. And thank goodness we can afford it. As for the credit card thing. I think I might do that to cover my text books. Thank you soon much for the help. Larry- You're right. You're awesome! Love, |

I would strongly suggest against the use of credit cards for your books. You are setting yourself up for some serious consequences in the future. You need to look into Stafford unsubsidized loans which are capped at interest rates somewhere a heck a of lot less than credit cards which will suck you in and not let you go. |

Whatever you do, do not use credit cards, from the voice of experience, they do suck you in and never let go...God as my witness...otherwise...good luck to you always, just the mere idea of your will to seek further education is a breath of fresh air. You have my sincerest admiration. |

Credit cards aren't exactly the devil. You can get one with a fairly small limit. It's a good way to establish good credit. You just have to be careful and responsible. True, the interest rates for students can suck, but if you just use them for books and emergencys and pay of as much of it as soon as you can, then go for it. Also, why can't you get a small job during school? Most places will work around your schedule. Even just working a few hours a week can help! Oh, make me Thine forever |

I was also wondering why you can't work during school? It's rough sometimes, but sometimes you just have to suck it up. I went from being jobless freshman year (not by choice, I couldn't find a job) to swinging two jobs and 20 credit hours last semester. And these are nursing-school credit hours, where a 6-hour clinical counts for about 2 hours in credit hours (*grumbles about the injustice*)... it wasn't fun, but rent has to be paid and the car must be gassed... Local Parasite... oh dear... a hundred bucks? She'll be extremely lucky to cover two classes' worth of books with that... Credit cards have bailed me out in a number of instances... it's true, being nearly maxed out on two cards and owing thousands really sucks, but you have to think about those oh-crap-I-blew-a-tire-how-will-I-drive emergencies. And books are gonna cost you... probably hundreds. Just curious, I noticed you're living in Cali... going to school there? I've heard Cali colleges are free to Cali residents... any truth to this? |

Thank Goodness for Stafford Loans. I'll have to fork over money later on but for now I am home free. |
