Bare tree branches whisper in the wind
as the cold air grasps at my mouth
drawing out wisps of heated breath
that passes up into the sky and seems
to form a halo around a midwinter moon

the cold starts to tingle at my feet
as I walk across the frosty ground
where grass crunches in uneven lumps
startling a deer standing ghostlike
only feet from my unobservant path

The sky is winter clear
the milky way seen in broad bands
a clarity you don't have in the city
where all I see is headlights and smell
the leftovers of dirty people

The breeze shiftily changes direction
as the air takes on the smell of snow
intimating the coming of another winter gale
and I can't tell you if my eyes water
from the cold or the beauty before me

This reminds me of when I used to pull guard duty in the middle of no where on cold winter nights in Germany...I was wearing everything I had and was still cold...it was dark...it was eiree...but it was beautiful...James

James,
I enjoyed reading about your cold. Real cold is hell and I've been there.
