More than Windows In one unguarded moment of honest exchange (before furtive glances resume), our eyes meet, Brother. I am astonished at red-rimmed irises surrounding gray, in a nightmarish flash I recognize an unwanted guest: disease. In its stealthy way, it joins our clan, personified as a foul distant relative come to stay. As a premonition of death leaps from my mind to yours, we look away. Our airy gab belies what has just passed between us, but then we have always been a family of deniers. © 2002 Corinne Bailey [This message has been edited by Corinne (02-18-2002 02:47 PM).] |
