You wear your marks of black and blue
Your legacy of pain
A garment not meant for you
Ill fitting, full of shame

You hate this defeat filled life
You long for so much more
Who asks to be a battered wife?
How far it seems to the door

How did this man gain control?
What happened to self- esteem?
He owns your body, he rapes your soul
You’re smothered just like your screams

Bruises slowly fading to yellow
Remind you, you’re still alive
Casting off that garment of pain
Putting on the will to survive

Seeking shelter and knowledge
Fighting to take back your life
Your soul slowly restores itself
No longer the battered wife.

This is so nice Poet, I also hate these situations and I would never stand for it. I suppose the women are truly afraid. This was nice. floria

Beautifully said, Cheryl. No woman should ever be abused or battered. Period! Seek relief! Quickly!

Cheryl,
I have goose bumps just reading this. I just can't imagine the horror of this experience. It makes me so angry. Thank you so much for posting this for my friend. Thank you, thank you.

Cheryl,

Well-said lines about a trauma that happens all too much.  I think that every woman who escapes this type of situation makes the world a better place for her courage to save and restore her life.  Your poem carries a great message.

(big hugggssssss) Oh Cheryl, this too makes me so angry when husbands can be so cruel and treat wives with such disrespect and hatred, I too despise of these actions and my heart cries out to all women affected by this trauma! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, my heart goes out to Larry's friend and so many others hurt by this, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Cheryl, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Oh I can't even stand this thought, and whats worse is it is not even just the beatings that hurt, sometimes it is the words.  Thanks for posting this special piece for Larry.  Hugs.

Thank you all for reading and replying. I'm sorry I did not have internet access today so I couldn't respond sooner. Larry, I'm glad you found this and I hope you'll share it with your friend. She deserves so much better. The problem is, most battered women don't think they are deserving of anything.

What a sad thing. I could wish that this were a fantasy, and someone's true situation. Sigh.

How sad that some people have to go through this from day to day. My prayers will be with Larry's friend. A very powerful poem, Cheryl.

What a sensitive and caring poem for a friend. Abuse, in any shape or form, is an  intolerable affront to humanity. Anything you can do to help someone out of this tragic situation is commendable. Thanks for sharing this. I have been at the receiving end of an abusive fist before, and do not intend to ever let that happen again.
