Your Smile

Your smile is the unseen sun in the blueness
of sky; the dance of the dreams I hug until
waking, the gentle lullaby of my sleep when
it is not peopled with dragons. It is
the sparkle of the day on the crest
of a beaching wave, the jealous sheen on a
leaf glinting off a dewdrop falling
to thirsty ground.
Ah, your smile teases my soul like the threat
of rain hovering over my bare-headed afternoons,
like a pressing reminder of needing people
between my yearning cold and your warmth;
otherwise cherished, but far and stranger now --
and only because your smile calls me closer still,
even as it grows farther with the passing years.
