Viet Nam vet will work for food

by Michael

“Viet Nam vet will work for food”
was what his cardboard sign had read.
I watched him take people’s money,
“Jesus loves you” he always said.

Gray hair and living in the woods,
I offered him a job one day,
to help rebuild his self esteem,
but would he work?  There was no way!

It seems, Jack Daniels was his friend
and that is why he had no home.
His wife had left and children, too.
All that he did, was drink and roam.

He never served in Viet Nam.
It angered me to find he lied,
because so many of our young,
had lost their limbs, so many died.

He also didn’t believe in Christ.
Was using Him to take us in,
to get as much as he could get,
then, "Jesus loves you” with a grin.

It was much later I found out,
when handcuffed, he was led away.
He had been wanted by the law.
Thank God, they caught him on that day.

A child molester, on the run
and now he’d have to serve his time.
Not sure this demon, dressed in flesh,
deserves his story set to rhyme.

(What you have just read is a true story)

Stars will shine when I am gone
Earth will spin on as before
Gulls still race along the shore
Morning star, still kiss the dawn

Wow this is really powerful, it's unfortunate when we get taken in by people who abuse our trust. Thank you for sharing this.

Sad. I've seen this scene before, but I'm sure it's the exception rather than the rule.
I can only imagine the type of conscience that man has, if any at all.

Michael

It's one thing to be poor and in need of help, but to use being a vet as a reason, when it isn't true...is pretty low.  Good writing, Michael.

When I read the title, I thought it was going to be a very touching piece. You really threw a twist in there. That’s terrible that someone would lie about being a veteran to con people. And a child molester? Well, I’m sure I don’t have to expound my thoughts on that subject. What goes around comes around. He will get his in prison, I’m sure.

Mike - Some people have absolutely no shame.  Good thing he was taken off the streets before he hurt another child, but knowing our judicial system, he is probably out on parole and wondering them again.  Nice writing.

Michael,

Thank God he was finally taken where he belonged.  Unfortunately, what Dave said is true, he'll be out way to soon. Good write.

Hugs,

Excellent expression here, Michael!

It's astounding how low people will stoop.  And being a child molester and exploiting the term 'veteran'...just sickens me!
Although I'm sure that he won't serve too much time, at least justice has prevailed for now.

Take care,
Melissa~

I don't know what the laws are down there but a child molester here is degraded publically for a very long time, and usually serves out their full sentence, so I hope he gets exactly what is coming to him for that.  I can't even start on what I feel about him impersonating a Vietnam Vet, for if I started I would never stop, so I will simply say this was no "man" and I hope that he gets everything coming to him. Good story telling on a true topic Michael.

Its difficult, in the face of things like this, to keep the desire to help other human beings on faith. I know the aim here is at this man, his deception, and his arrest. All of that comes through very well here. enjoyed.

Really good writing and your message comes through clearly. Such a shame how some use scams like this to lure we "Tender-hearted" in. I confess I'm one. Vietnam Vets have such a special place in my heart that I'm a big softie. It is wise, though, to know who you're giving to. The best advice I give these me is to get in touch with Vietnam Vets of America or other organizations. I wrote my own take on this situation which I'll post soon. Thanks for yours. Cheryl
