We’re up so far, the mountain tops are
only hills heaped along the sky in winter
like ridges of vanilla ice cream
cold and sweet in a brilliant blue bowl.

In spring they show their anticipation,
waking round and virginal,
nearly bare, suggesting youth,
unsullied and chaste above the tree line.

Then sapient in parched summer browns,
they lean, wearied, wise, and aged,
in worn old clothes, patiently waiting in line,
shrewd and silent with the sun
scorching their balding heads.

Autumn sweeps past so quickly here.
Hypnotized by amorous winds
and powdered sugar nights,
the mountains sink into that deep sleep
while burnished rusts and golds grace
their faces delicately, tucking them in
beneath brief and glorious quilts.
Yes, in autumn, like all lovers,
the mountains learn to dream.

You give me a new appreciation for the mountainside... (She says from her seaside stance)... Your words are wondrous - and your visage is indeed magnificent... Thank you, Rosemary...

Noah, Nan, Martie and Seymour - I really appreciate your comments about this. I do love these mountains so much, and wanted to share their beauty, and individuality somehow.

Those Bitterroots can be bittersweet, depending upon your POV. I love the POV you presented. You always capture the essence of the beauty and charm of the edges of wilderness.

Rosemary...This is more than poetic excellence.  This is a poem of delightful textures, intricate features. I thoroughly enjoyed this poem.  ***Ivy Rose
