Within the past week, I've run into three people whom I went to high school with. (we won't say how long ago THAT was!) My school wasn't huge, by any means, but it was big-ish - and these three were people that I only knew of, and didn't really "know". What was strange, or rather more upsetting than strange, was that all three (in their own words, of course) said the same thing: "I wish I would have known you then, but I never wanted to talk to you because I thought you were snotty." SNOTTY!  I was so shocked! I mean, I can think of words to describe myself; like, shy, somewhat reclusive, quiet, introverted, always kind...but never snotty. Needless to say, I felt absolutely terrible. How awful that I came off that way to them. Then it got me to thinking: What if a LOT of people see me that way now, becasue I'm really not one to start conversations with people I don't know? Not for any lack of a desire to get to know people, but more like a social ineptitude problem. SO - that line of thinking brought me here, to PiP, where I spend a lot (lot lot) of time. Again, I realized that I only "talk" to a small handfull of people...sigh. I'm too shy! There is a point to all of this - I've made a resolution, I'm going to be more outgoing! How anyone could see you as snotty is beyond me!! Sometimes people just 'label' us for their own purposes. They may not have wanted to get to know you because you weren't in their 'crowd', so they found a way to justify that - thus YOU must be snotty not to want to hang out with them. Shyness is VERY hard to overcome. I personally hate crowds. I avoid them like the plague - even parties (don't invite me because I won't show up!) It's not that I don't like people, I do. I just don't think they'll like me!! I think it's time to stop taking the bad rap for being 'reserved'..sure all those outgoing people are 'popular'..but shy people can be nice too..................... ok..rant over. So, Nic - how's life? |

Nicole, I don't know you. But we are very similar in one way anyhow. I'm shy as well. And know exactly what you're talking about. Right now, I'm just joining a theater troupe and hope I already haven't come off snoty because I feel like I don't belong yet and won't say too much. But I'm NOT! And I'm sure you're not either. Sometimes people just don't bother to take the time to think beyond a set of lables they give to people..such as.. The Jock, social butterfly, or Snot. It agrivates me as well. But don't try to change yourself. Becoming more outgoing is a goal of mine too. I'll never like large social gatherings though I'm sure! Joy |

Nic, I got the same thing all through high school... it seemed like anytime I made a new friend (and being a professional "new kid" this happened often), they would tell me "You know, before I knew you I always thought you were the biggest snob. But you're so nice." Uh, gee… thanks? I can’t tell you how many times that happened. (and, yes, friends have called me nice *wary eyes to certain individuals**g*) I think it's a combination of shyness, and an introspective face. *grins* Whenever I'm deep in thought, people tend to think I'm upset or pissed. So, cheer up, sweetie… it just means you’re quiet and smart. And if people have a problem with that, just whip out your tortilla cape and offer them some SuperSalsa. *SHROH* |

Aww, acire!  Sven - Thanks! That makes me feel better.. Sharon!! I know exactly what you mean, about parties and groups. *gasp* I'm terrible, sometimes even when my family or closest friends ask me to do something...I actually have to gear myself up to going. "I know I'll have a nice time, once I get there.." Shyness is so hard to overcome - and I do not like big crowds. Alicia - Thank you! Joy - That is so true, and good luck to you in your new theater troupe! And I agree, we should never try to mold ourselves to others' lables - just for the sake of 'fitting in'. Nicole.. yeah a lot of ppl NOW think I am "stuck up" 'coz I don't want to go up to them and talk.. I'm not too good at starting conversations.. and I only really talk to a select group of friends.. I'm too shy..  but here is good.. ^^ Here ppl don't judge others.. and I'm not so shy here.. I guess, when ppl label you like that? It's just because they are insecure? Or jealous.. they really do want to be your friends.. at least now, u know what they thought, so u can go out there, and make sure no-one ever thinks that again, unless u don't care of their opinion, or they have good reason to. *_^Dopey, don't cry..
