On chill days Filled with grey wind Chasing clouds across A frowning sky The season’s cheer Seems falsely forgiving To those who did Not wrap themselves In layers of family And friends Their days of empty Replaced with garish Lights and tinsel frenzy Seem filled briefly With warmth But like bourbon shot On empty stomach The flush passes all To quickly with the season Leaving an empty burn Of desire for another. |

I'm with you. sigh. Here in New Orleans we have a perfect antidote to the Holiday Season. MARDI GRAS!!! then? LET THE FESTIVALS COMMENCE!!! Jazz Fest, French Quarter Fest, Strawberry Fest, Crawfish Fest, Gumbo Fest, Rice Fest ad infinitum... But seriously. This made my heart ache. I hate the holidays. |

There is no celebration in MY Mudville this year. And a shot of Diet Coke doesn't have the same effect as bourbon. |

Ron--Too many are turned down by the Christmas spirit because of circumstance. Makes one contemplate the true meaning. A thought-filled poem, my friend. |

Lots of ice in this shotglass full of truth. I'm happy to say I am surrounding myself with friends this year, if not family, wxcept of course, my wonderful daughter, Sara. |

I'll go against the majority and admit that I am pretty well-off at Christmas. I am surrounded by family, mainly because I live at home. It's not really a pleasurable experience (most of my family is so materialistic that they turn Christmas into a celebration of wealth and possession), but I still can't say that I have a problem with having nobody else around. If anything the main thing I dislike about Christmas is having to ruin it for everyone else by pretending I like all the pointless junk people buy for me. I've always had a policy of spending no money on Christmas gifts. This ensures that only the best gifts are given to people, and it's never a sacrifice of mere wealth that goes into the gift. Oh, I'm off topic. I would love to be able to enjoy the company of family and friends, but on Christmas it seems like none of them see eye-to-eye with me. I understand how you're feeling though, with everyone else around you having a great time at Christmas it makes you feel even worse about having nobody to celebrate with. It's understandable. But if you want comfort, then like I said, most people's celebrations aren't something to be jealous of. Parasite Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored. |

Ser... festivals are your major export down there aren't they? Ms Devine... Sorry there will be no joy in Mudville.... is it because Casey struck out or did you? martie.. I guess it in part depends on what you see the true meaning as being.. JM.. my mothy one... I'll call the bah humbug... what you got in your hand? As for a coat... I think we would be better served by a fire..what do you think? MS... I am happy you have your daughter and fiends to warm your season. May they days be filled with the warmth of love for you all. LP... you may have drifted off subject, but you touched on many of the reasons I wrote this in the first place. It is the hypocrasy of actions during the holidays that denies the truths lived the rest of the year by family and friends. Not always... as I do not believe there are not true loving and caring people or families, it is however the false warmth... like a shot of whiskey on an empty stomach.. a brief warming, then the emptiness. I would that there were not so much pressure or so much emphasiss put on elaborate gifts.. but that the gifts given were indeed a simple exchange of love and care for those around us, practiced throughout the year...not just at the holiday season. I am fortunate... I have a good job and live comfortably as well. Christmas is not a hardship on me from a money standpoint... but it is a hard thing for me to swallow emotionally. Tinsel lasts but a brief time...and the luster is lost, just as the intentions are lost in many people's celebrating of the season.. now..guess I got off subject a bit too.. thanks to you all... and I do hope your holidays are filled with the joys of love. |

And in that, we know why January is the month of many returns... return of gifts return of spirit to the hum of drum and every January for some of us diehards... we look forward with some tinsled, wrinkled hope, of next Christmas being different... |

LOL at your reply to my reply. Did you intend to say fiends? I'm ASSUMING that was a typo. Thanks for the silly grin. |

you've captured the true spirit of the holidays very well. i'm with you serenity. i hate the holidays. and i've always wanted to live in new orleans. i envy you. but back on track. this was an amazing piece, that, as said before, captured the horrible feelings the holidays invoke in me. though i'm surrounded by family, they're not really there. and blah blah blah. i loved this. plain and simple. excellent work. /jen/ 'i don't care if it hurts, i want to have control. i want a perfect body, i want a perfect soul.' Damn Jen.... I don't know what to say here. I always expect at least a little jab from your comments.... the holidays are not my favorite time of year either. I find them to be far more stressful than they need to be and the expectations people have for what they should be usually set them up for failure no matter what... thanks for reading are you sure you're feeling ok?
