That word fell on the floor like a spent bullet casing as three boys continued talking as if they hadn’t heard it as if they hadn’t said it Beside me, stood my best friend silent holding her breath as the the word spilled out so carelessly I felt shame and fear these were my brother’s friends I wanted to be liked by them wanted some day to date one or maybe two they were gods in my eyes were ‘Excuse me’ I said hesitantly they looked up grew silent smiling at me as they always had at Barry’s little sister speaking to them for the first time I said “Apologize” ‘for what?’ they asked in unison still smiling “for the word” they looked at each other wondering what I meant dismissing me as a kid They laughed again so I moved closer standing taller trembling in fear and confusion at my daring ‘Take that word back!” they laughed again got up and left the house and still I stood shaking My friend took my hand ‘thank you for trying’ we went to my room and played with our Barbie’s at twelve we were almost too old mine - blonde and fair hers - darkly beautiful at twelve that summer of 1964 we grew older still because a war started from someone using that word “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” -- Martin Luther King, Jr. [This message has been edited by Poet deVine (10-20-2002 12:11 AM).] |

PdV, And I am so proud to call you my friend. And honored to post the first response to such an important poem. Very well done, very well. Class and integrity, mixed with courage and loyalty. Who could ask for more? If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

wonderful Sharon...one of your best, and I like this style from you! (and YOU know that this is a scenario STILL played out in my own little (red) neck corner of the wood) sigh...how hatred makes some folks feel better about themselves is still a concept beyond me. sigh. wonderful words--wonderful poet. HUGS. |

smiling again...this kinda reminded me of me--except? when they laughed? I'd prolly have knee'd one of em...and then they'd have hit me back, and everyone would be reading a much different poem. Much better YOUR way. |
