aw man--I just hired an interpreter for James Joyce---and now I need one for YOU? sigh sigh sigh  It's true--I've got this mental block regarding Joyce--required reading rebellion, yanno... so? I'll wait for Ed and Bri to comment, with interest.  |

Okay---I'm gonna ask a favor... smile? someone break this down for me...and SHOW me? I've an admitted mental block of Joyce---and now I am admittedly intrigued...but I suppose it's the language and my infamiliarity of cadence and rhythm...hell dunno..but somebody explain it to me? sigh...I hate to think of a pary going on without me. *pout* and like a kid in class? (and I was always like this) persistant---I don't get it... where's the dunce cap smilie? |

Hey witch, Here, I'll break down my reply. But first, read it aloud and listen. So, here goes. Yanno? This stuff is harder to break down than it is to write. Just imagine 600+ pages of this. "B. (eggrandized - egg ref., mikes' increased knowledge of Joyce) "ho-hum tea and dumped tea" ( Humpty, Dumpty(broken eggs), Tea(breakfast),tea for two,Ho-hum - dumped) "Oh, lait lo! Bakin' aches to guessed oftener" (Tea au lait(breakfast), (eggs) laid low (broken)(Lo!)) (bacon and eggs, painful thought process) (Guest of honor(the challenge), second guessing) "Mourning d'oeuve chaud the whey." (Morning egg, Mourning dove, hot eggs, cooked in butter) "Wry totes and jam(bon?) twend." (Rye toast, toast and jam, toast and ham, good ham, (bent, twisted accumulation) twend-(to go, the end) "Smilelacky, you half finnish?" (foolin, around with Mikes' name and parentage, be happy - you're finished with the challenge?. Lacky, references Mikes obligation to the challenge) Hope that this helps ya, the real challenge, is in the layers of meaning, language, intent. It goes on and on, deeper and deeper. By the way, Miss Blaise? Here's a bit of a key for ya.The thing I love about reading Finnegans Wake is everybody's interpretation is equally valid and invalid. The other wonderful thing is, by masking the words with the utmost clarity, you suddenly crack open language, and a thousand different ideas are possible ... First of all, "Light breakfast" (the light breaks fast) is about death as much as breakfast. Crack of milkface could be a skull. Grashell -- grave? Edgetomb, obvious. "Scriptsure" Script on the grave? Scripture? "Cendanterry" -- cemetary? Amort, obviously death? So see, that's the "Deeper values" of this poem, though I still leave it up to your imagination to figure out the meaning of the other words. And, quite literal level (if that's even possible): Turporcentil (two percentile? two person till? turpor??) crack of milkface (milk, or the color of the egg shell?) grashell = granite shell. So cracked granite? Cracked shell? Or grape shell? Or gracious? Pourl = you pour the milk, or the egg is a pearl? (or the poor are buried)? Edgetomb atoll (mortality or .... tomb atoll= tom-a-to) countersuffence. Sounds like suffering or providence ...or a counter's surface. Lagcrawl the Lagging crawl? Death? Or Ants crawling up a table leg? scriptsure brinage Sounds like scripture being drowned in salt, the sea? Death? Salt on egg? spun siphson ... ant and Spoon and ant? Spun cipher? Spoon spinning in bowl, with the sun rising its light over it? cedanterry -- Soat, amort err swallit. Cedars? Oats? Mouth? Swallow? Cemetary? So? Death? Swallows or wallet?
