She stood on the corner staring at his license plate as he drove away. It’s odd, she thought, I never knew what was on his license plate!

Alice and Todd had been dating for two years and tonight, the night before Valentine’s Day; Todd told her he wanted to date other people. Alice was stunned. Didn’t know what to say so she said nothing. They sat across from each other in a booth at ‘The Library’, an upscale yuppie restaurant.

As Todd outlined his plan, dividing up the possessions they bought together, giving back the keys each had to the other’s apartment and justifying the breakup as something she needed as well. His logic as always was impeccable. They were too young, not ready, commitment material. He ended with an accusation that since she never once took him to meet her friends at work, that she was ashamed of him.

Alice blinked twice, not to hold back the tears but just to have something to do. She felt dead. In fact, she realized now, she felt nothing.

Todd paid for their salads and Alice said she’d like to go. They got up and went outside where Todd walked her to his black Grand Prix and opened the passenger door for her.

“I’ll walk I think.” She said.

“But it’s three miles!” He protested.

“I’d rather walk. Really, I have a lot of thinking to do.”

“OK. Suit yourself.” Todd slammed the door and then ran (yes ran!) around to the other side and jumped into the car. The door barely closed before the engine revved and he took off.

That’s when she noticed his license plate. She smiled and shook her head. If only she had seen it before, it would have saved them both a lot of time.

She turned and started walking home.

Ten blocks away, the black Grand Prix stopped at a light. In the gathering dusk, Todd turned on the car’s lights, illuminating the license plate that read:

I was born myself, raised myself, and will continue to be myself. The world will just have to adjust.

And given the humor of the Great Cosmic Entity I bet that wasn't even a vanity plate but one just randomly assigned by the DMV... proving that even in this chaotic world there is a certain order to it all. A smile to you most DeVine One.
