Unspoken behind the poet's smile Are promises that charm and beguile Evoking memories wakened there Whispered syllables of silent prayer. Heated word in flames of desire Frigid breath - belies touch of fire Words come knocking on the heartless door Battering, bruising - worth fighting for A breath catches in soundless surprise Someone’s life displayed for prying eyes Poet’s songs, are they music in verse Delighting in each new phrase perverse So keep safe your counsel if you must For a poet’s tongue you may not trust What soul now will the poet defile? What lurks behind the poet’s smile? |
