One Year

Exactly one year ago today

You quietly said goodbye
Tears of heartache fell
From both our pained eyes
I heard the apologetic tone
Of your voice as you tried
To explain what you felt
All I knew was the feeling
Of my heart as it shattered
Knowing we were ending

A year ago on this night

I thought my whole world
Was over, slowly dying.
I thought the salty tears
Would never stop falling
Scarring the pieces of
My heart that lay scattered
Dead around my cold
And sobbing soul
Feeling lost and so alone

A year from that night

I am lost in the past
Old memories and hopes
I wait for tears of loss
I see your soft smile
I hear the words you spoke
And I wait to feel the
Sharp pain of remembrance
Of a love said goodbye.
But it doesn't come.

In the year that has past

I’m able to now see
That things are the way
They are suppose to be
Our hearts once joined
Were meant to teach
We learned lessons
That we both should
Hold close and cherish
Things we needed to learn.

Now here, a year later

I can realize in full
What you have given me
My first taste of real and
Unconditional love
My first true heartache
I thank you for the lesson
Thank you for making me strong
Thank you for showing
Me how to love.

What a healing piece.  I have often questioned that old saying:

"It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all..."

When one is in the "lost" part it seems like it should be abbreviated to:  "It is better to have never loved at all!..."

Oh I suck at responding, but know that I really like this piece!!

This is sooooo lovely! Being able to learn, being able to SEE the lesson is a true mark of personal growth. It's a shame though, that some lessons have to hurt so much. The pain of a broken heart is such a deep and recurring wound, which takes a long time to heal from. You have written of it in a magnificent way! Bravo, bravo!!!

Love,
Bonnie

Noah - As usual, thank you. I love to see your responses

Silver - Thank you for your sweet words. And thank you for stopping in

amusemi - You don't suck at responding LOL. And I know exactly what you mean.  A year ago I definately would have wished never to love at all. Time, as they say, does heal. Now I am grateful for what I learned... and I have a good healthy loving relationship thanks to some of those lessons.

Bonnie - Very true.  Like you say.. it's a shame it has to be so painful.  Then again, if it hadn't been I might not have learned the lessons...

It takes a long time to come full circle.
The battle of loving is hard fought,
and not without lessons learned.
Every poem tells a story and you've told yours well.
Nicely done~

and these are the lessons that we all must learn. . . and again, I must say that, I wish that sometimes, we didn't have to go through the class. . .

wonderfully done Tara. . . flowing and heartfelt. . .

This is a wise piece and the repeating lines are very effective.

Very healing poem to read.  I hope it was as healing to write.
