Tommy's last swim

The Mississippi River was flooded that year
Backed into the woods far and near
Logs and debris floating everywhere
Rapid currents here and there.

It was only a slough were water backed through
Not deep not steep, lots of debris too
But no place to swim as Tommy went in
To take his last swim

Tommy lived next door was the same age as me
Just seven and like me he was very carefree
Went swimming with friends near the river that day
Thought it was a good way to have fun and play.

Got caught in a swirl as he was watched by a girl
The current sucked him out in a minute
Desperately fought, but could not swim back in it
The little girl screamed but it did no good
Found him later that day in a thick pile of wood.

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Newell, this is sooooo very heartwrenching, I have heard about this storm and it brought tears to my eyes to feel the life of a young boy hurt by this storm! (big hugggsssssss) So sad but well-written, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Newell, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

This is very sad and I like your rhyme within a sentence.  I had a little nephew about that age drown so I know how very much it hurt.  You too as a little fellow.  Joyce

Thank you, floria, for your loving thoughts. Yes it's sad. As I recall it was only the second time that I had heard about dying. I remember walking around in a daze, not believing it, not understanding it.

Thank you rebekah for your kind thoughts. Yes it is tragic. We must always teach our children to use care and prepare them for all eventualities.
