It’s Good To Be Alive Wake about five-thirty- Shower, shave, put coffee on... Load up my Suburban... Then by eight I’m always gone. To roll down Texas highways, Watch the miles go rolling by... I’ve a lot of time for thinking, And I have been known to cry. I’ll drive by those mile markers, That I have seen before. Maybe thirty years ago- With lots of time in store... I think about my brother- Who was killed in ninety-six, Now, just another memory- The years roll by so quick. I think about a cowboy- Who was tall, and lean, and hard. Who has now grown soft, and older, With his heart and body scarred... With a lot of bitter memories- Regretting things he’s done, I guess those things are par for course, When your race is almost run. Then I chide myself for folly- And I shrug and maybe laugh... To get my mind and heart back on- A less familiar path. I’ve a lot of miles to travel- Hours to think, ere I arrive... Somehow I must convince myself, It’s good to be alive. |
