In the cold of a February day
the groundhog sleeps, happily sound
all curled up safe and warm
in his burrow, under the ground

but suddenly something stirs him awake
he must go up and check it out
though its cold, this is really important
there cannot be any doubt

popping his head into the light
he shivers, fur standing on end
surveying the barren landscape
in the stillness, he spies a friend

its shaped like his head
but it has no eyes
nor does it have a nose or a mouth
as he looks around, he wonders
is it a friend in disguise?

wherever he moves, it follows him
he thinks it must like him a lot
he wants to bring it downstairs
so it can sleep on his spare cot

he takes his new friend's hand
as they descend beneath the ground
but down in that comfortable burrow
his buddy is nowhere to be found

its funny...he thinks, I held his hand
together, we climbed down the stairs
but the only time I can see him
is upstairs in the cold winter air

its February, and our furry friend
comes up to take a peek
seeing his shadow, he descends
its winter for six more weeks

Thanks so much, Marsha...the groundhog is actually a cousin to Madame Chipmunk.  They are both little rodents who live beneath the ground all winter long.
The day after tomorrow, my dear cousin will have his yearly 15 minutes of fame.

Thanks for the hugs, Nancy...I'll need them today to keep warm!
You are right, we always do get AT LEAST 6 more weeks of it...but that is the charm of this part of the country.

I don't know if its true or not, Floria...but it is a cute little legend.
One thing I will tell you is that we, chipmunks are too smart to do anything like that.
