It could happen in the middle of the night
it could happen in the meadows surrounding any sleepy village,
a sudden kidnapping, a mystery murder...
leaving no obvious clues, shall I go any further.

It could be your silent neighbour is very sick,
by day he's bright and cheerful and by night the devil's pick,
it could be his price is the rape of a person fair,
it could be that he ransoms that fair catch,
bundles and hauls them off to wood cabins thatched.

And then his letters start to appear in the news,
an ol'minister's daughter caught and violently abused
it could happen in the middle of a holiday meal,
it could happen in a sleepy village where the uncommon is an ordeal.

When village gossip of the news stops humming
and the ransom money is no longer forthcoming
sadly that lost person joins a missing list
with no further clues, should searches persist?!!

Something we all do not like to ever have
had happen to us....But a stark reminder
of what could and does...

Magnus,

And I am reminded of this each time I cross the border to the US or take a metro ride in the city and there are those same faces staring back at me from photo shots. What ever happened to thse kids?

It's a gruesome truth, that many missing are never found, or are sometimes found dead. Many of the missing children turn up in big cities, having run away to what they hoped would be 'freedom.' These missing ones should not be forgotten, but time and distance too often make it easy to set them aside as if they were last week's newspaper.
A sad but painfully true write, ecrivan.

Martin- Nicely done.  It is shame when children are missing, never to be found again.  The last stanza brought to mind the Sandra Levy case that happened in the states.  She is still missing without a trace.

Dave,

I became more aware of this in Italy, young married couple leaves their 3 year old to walk around a camp ground on her own, she was picked up by a stalker and never seen again! Then I get home and find out that there
is a heinous market for organs, and child molesters are here too.
