With Mattie I Danced (from Boyhood Tales) Never could dance - multiple left feet, non-existent rhythm, klutz, through and through - but with Mattie, I danced. She would twist me and turn me, move me this way, pull me that, all so she did the things the female half was supposed to do; and all the while she would laugh, her eyes sparkling, her body moving in ways mine never could. Mattie could dance, and she slow-danced too. She held me in ways I never knew one could, wordlessly telling me the things she felt, sharing emotions and dreams, her cheek hot against mine. Yeah Mattie could dance, and even now, years later, a lifetime since we last swirled across the floor together, I have to smile; I know she’s out there somewhere, with some other klutz, making him look good – too. w. james beard, jr. ©December 2001 |

Jimmy--I love this look into the past...you may not have been a good dancer, but you are a poet of grace. |

Superb writing, Jim. The right partner can always make us look good, can't they? |

What a great dance, what great memories. You took me there with you with this piece. And I love the ending If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please? |
