Cats that call from the front porch at night,
that gently stir under a hearth's fire, bright
unholy calls would squeeze through door jams
what could it be, surely not sacrificial lambs?

At first I saw a similarity between a feline here
and his look alike kin in Italy, a cousin, a peer;
His turf: friendly door posts of hasty neighbors,
his worth: seeking handouts and bidding favors.

Up grey painted slats to a glossy, red framed door
to try steep spiral stairs with furry wags in store,
a daily routine of food giving would soon enact
as the neighborly rations would soon slack.

To my neighbours that invite feline friends to dine
handing treats to furry friends found so devine;
when it comes to commitments of different sorts
I am spurred to be critical and offer retort.

If you give god's creatures, intelligent as this
do you expect the animal will cease to exist?
'cause a hand of food lasts for a quick meal
and a hungry belly is constant ordeal.

A constant beg for food, what a plight
for a handful of generosity, an uphill fight;
take the place of the feline picking his doors
howl at empty houses and count your scores!

Welcome to Passions, Martin!
I loved your poem but I feel sorry for those poor kitties.  It sounds like the poor little souls need to be found by some loving families.

Welcome to these poetry pages. I love kitties! But once you feed strays, they think they belong to you, so you have to either take them in or find them another home.

Martin,don`t you love this site? The people here are so sweet and friendly. When I first started working where I`m at now there was one old ugly cat.So I started feeding it.Well,I`ve been there 5 years and we now have about 10.I buy about 14 llbs of cat food a week.I`m more of a dog person but I really love all kinds of animals. Anyway I think your poem is great

Feeding stray cats is one of my weaknesses, I have taken in stray dogs, cats, even sparrows lol... The ones that bother me are the ones who are too nervous to come to the door either because of abuse or neglect. I just lay out the food in hopes I gain their trust.
Welcome my friend, great first write!
Cheers!

Thankyou all for your good wishes and warm encouragement and well writing poems is like nuturing a stray, I wouldn't want to live that up to the elements!

As a bonafide stray adopter (and slave to 3), I enjoyed the poem very much... of course, I figure any commitment worth making is one worth keeping... *S* Welcome to Passions!

My heart cries out to all these poor kittens and I pray with all my heart they find faithful owners who can feed them when they need it the most and love them. (sigh) My heart goes out to them all!
