The American Way

In the mountain stream
a watermelon cools
grandpa play’s his guitar
in his overall blues
singing old mountain hymn’s
while grandma listens,
and faithfully grins

A red and white check cloth
covers an old picnic table
where mama plays guard with her flyswat
while daddy grills hot dogs
the old american classic’s

Kid’s squeal and jump off  rocks
into ice cold water
while mama hollers
be careful, and look out for your brother
a heritage of love passed
from one to another

A rush of cool breeze
brings fall colored leaves
where kids fill pumpkin shaped bags
and american flags hang on roof tops edge

On Thanksgiving Day
we hold hands, to bow and pray
giving thanks for a blessed day
filled with turkey and dressing
and warmed by pumpkin pie
we sit on porch swings
watching children  play
thankful for another day

We dream of a white christmas
as winter ice dangles outside
flickering flames in a fireplace
reflect what’s in our hearts
and sparkle on glass ornaments
as we anticipate fresh egg nog
made mama’s way
we write down all  wishes
bake cookies for Mr Kringle
give daddy big kiss’s
and pass on traditions
this is the American way.

We wouldn’t have any other way
where freedom rings
and in church we can sing
God Bless America

This is a lovely picture of America. Sounds a lot like my childhood. Thank you for allowing me to have a respite from all the trouble in the world.

Poet~ Thank you. With all the heartache going on in our country, I had to reflect within myself some joy of living here in our great country.

Topheth~ I hope this brought warm memories for you too. Thank you.

Marge~ Thank you. I have a feeling you have shared a few of these same memories with loved ones.

Deb-
This is beautiful...such a tender trip
   down memory lane.
Very nicely penned, my sweet friend.

Your images and verse are the loveliest side of peace and comfort. I remember them well and hope remains solid for them to return.
Prayers and Peace.

What a slice of pure ole American Pie. Well at least the way it was.

Very nice and inspirational.
