Decry this land's integrity
Besmirch it, call it vile;
Because of her, you’ve liberty
To spew forth putrid bile.

Some grieve the loss of criminals
Thus mock the innocent;
For slaughtered individuals
By some, no tears are spent.

The starving children everywhere?
We feed those in the fray;
Because their leaders do not care
Repression rules the day.

We are the villains nonetheless
To some, what e’re we do
I haven’t heard, I must confess,
Alternatives, have you?

Insulting speech, vain diatribe
Solves nothing, I submit;
Unless solutions are prescribed
No one can benefit.

Despite her faults this is a land
That aims for decency
And by her side I’ll take my stand
For truth and liberty.

Thank you all for reading and for your replies. We are blessed to live in a land where we have such precious freedoms.

Wornways, could you be a bit more specific about where the meter needs smoothing out? Thanks, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks wornways.....lol.....but no, I haven't changed anything in the poem but merely went in to put more spacing between the picture and the poem, but whew! I'm glad it's okay, as next to the message, to me, meter is right up there! Thanks again for reading and for your comments!

Thank you, Elizabeth, Startime and Balladeer for reading and for your wonderful replies! After hearing so much garbage being slung about I had to voice my opinion. I hear denunciations of the U.S. by some, but not one single viable alternative to the course we are on, which leads me to believe that some people just like to sling mud for the sake of slinging mud. Thanks again for your input!

Wow, Denise, I've never seen you take such a strong stand before.

This is a great poem, filled with the emotionals that run high within us all now.

Hey sweet patriotic lady poet ! !

Your meter is 'spot-on' ... the message very clearly stated~
LOVE IT~

You know what they say ???
'Throw a little dirt ... you lose a little ground !'
Our country .... love it ... or get outta Dodge~
Love you~
