Zip and Uncurl

Golden light all blurred and moistened,
fuzzed all outlines hazy drain
of sun’s delight, no stir of air
by twisting leaf or sigh, this day.

Even brittle fall with
its sweep of umber, orange and brown
can’t take the gray from city streets
or turn the playground into gay.

Little girls hold hands,
but the grumble in my ears
gobbles up their laughter,
the sound all swallowed
by the train caught in a toot
that falls along the tracks.

Where is the uplifted wing,
so feathered with blue its dash
across the yards of turning dormant?
All is crow of quarrel now.

Wind song from the north,
come and take the gray from day.
Zip and uncurl my shadow
on the sidewalk,
shine my hair for I would frolic
with glorious sun.

To decorate this aging
is no longer possible, but the wind
knows, just moaning in the afternoon
changes the listener.
