Excuse for a Clown
By Larry Chadwick

It is one frozen moment in time,
One I can’t ever begin to recall.
Up in a mighty sycamore tree,
Almost the tallest of them all.

Grandpa hung a rope and tire,
On which my cousins did swing.
And when it finally broke one day,
I decided I would fix the thing.

Since I was the oldest of them all,
It just seemed the right thing to do.
I scouted until I finally found,
A rope that was as good as new.

Without a moments hesitation,
I climbed right up that big old tree.
Heights didn’t bother me one bit,
Way up there I felt completely free.

My mother (as they usually do)
Had an entirely different take.
Son, don’t you fall from there,
Or something you may break.

On the way up a branch did break,
And left a gap some ten feet long.
So after tying that long rope on,
Coming down I sang a different song.

Stumped, there I sat up in the tree,
Wondering how to get to the ground,
When a bright idea popped in my head,
Jump on the rope and shinny on down.

Being fifteen I knew I was really smart,
With no understanding of brittle sycamore.
I jumped in confidence when I heard a snap,
This was really going to make mom sore.

Thirty feet I fell straight down to the ground,
Knocked out by the branch on the way down.
And that is the reason that until this very day,
I have an excuse for acting like a class clown.

Sin isn't fair, but God got even, grace isn't fair either.  larry c

LOL, Larry, we just gotta be related! I was the best tree climber in my neighborhood. But it was when I jumped off the garage roof that I got into BIG trouble.

A funny memory for me, maybe not so funny for you?

Midnitesun,
No harm, no foul! I walked away. Grampa fell 12 feet and crushed both ankles. Thought I did pretty good. But had an instant fear of hieghts! And still I rock climb with my son.   I thought we already agreed we were related. cuz?

I bet mom wasn't the only one sore after this escapade! *G* Excellent tale, Larry... I thoroughly enjoyed.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.
