She put the pastry on the shelf
chocolate covered éclair
And every day she looked at it
staring at her, sitting there

It grew hard and tinged with green
but still she never touched it
This was his favorite, his only pleasure
it became her token of regret

She told him it was bad you see
she listed the things one by one
she took away his beer, his chips
took away what he called ‘fun’

She thought he was coming along
He was changing before her eyes
then one day he never came home
she was then forced to realize

You can’t make a man over again
you can accept him or leave him be
how do I know this tale is true
Well, my friends, it happened to me.

So true, so true, we can't change anybody else (nor should we try), we can only work on ourselves. Wise words, Sharon!

he or she who tries to change another is
fighting an uphill battle....For it is enough
to try to take care of ourselves, let alone
someone else too.....BTW....I love chocolate
eclairs....

STANDING OVATION!!!BRAVO!!! It is not possible to change a person into the vision we think they should be. Besides it was them we fell in love with not the one we saw in our minds. A great lesson for us all in this wonderful poem. My ex tried to change me into his dead wife even to the extent that he had me wear her perfume and the same kinds and colors of clothes. It almost destroyed who I was. I too learned a lesson about how it is not healthy to let someone have so much control over me.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Geez we are all getting disclaimer crazy! It may be fiction but rings true. We can't control others and probably wouldn't want who we could.

It may be fiction, but there's a lot of truth in it. We should not ever try to change anyone. If we do, they are no longer the person we fell in love with. Plus, they'll probably resent you for it

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

Thank you all for your kind words. I put the disclaimer there so no one would feel they had to offer me their sympathy - it's more honest this way.

This is very true! We all learn through experiences. No one should ever try to change anyone. My husband tried to change me. In some ways he did, but not to his approval, I know.

So true. You can't change a man or anyone else for that matter.
The eclair would have been a bit too tempting.
Good poetry in fiction.

Ahhh yes.  If he is a butt, he will always be one. Either get over it and love him anyway. Or get rid of him, and move on
LOL- I liked this.

Yes with love comes the realization that they are who they are and no one is perfect so it is an acceptance of who they are not who you want them to be...when I really care for a woman I find that it is no problem for me to accomidate their desire for happiness...if they want to go to the mall I'll go to the mall...ha...James

This one is sad but oh so true.to change someone. no one should do.for when they change them into what they should be.
It's not the person they thought they would see.

Tis definitely one of much truth and I am sure that there are many that relate to it.  One of the hardest things in life is learning to accept and you have brought this before us in a wonderful penning to ponder.  I truely enjoyed the piece and it's wisdom.

and oh yeah..........ROCK ON D-BACKS!!! What a perfect ending to an excellent season.  Yeah, I know they aren't the Card's but hey, they are the best this year.
