I gave to you all my heart
Happened from the very start
Things were so fresh and new
I wanted only to be with you

Through the years trials arose
Life got in the way I suppose
Things between us slowly changed
One day we discovered life rearranged

I accept that I’m to blame
For making you feel so ashamed
Of who you were and wanted to be
At the time I thought of only me

By the time I realized what I had done
Your love was gone with the setting sun
I was left shattered, torn, and alone
As my heart turned cold as stone

I know you think I tried to run your life
Bringing you nothing but endless strife
But all I ever really wanted for you
Was for you to do the best you could do

I knew you had the potential to succeed
Even though I bet you’d disagree
I guess it doesn’t matter anymore
You’ve forever closed your heart’s door

I could wish, hope, and pray
That you would see me another way
But that would be to no avail
Your love will never grace my sail

I know I’ve paid the highest price
For not matching your sacrifice
I did the best I knew how to do
But it wasn’t good enough for you

I see we both made some mistakes
We’ve suffered great heartaches
Pain and anguish now abound
Where our love was once found

All writing comes
by the grace of God.

LW....well said...to often we learn valuable
lessons after the fact....

Sad thing is....no one gave us a book on how
to love, communicate,  how to take care of
our daily lives.  The world can be very
challenging.  And becomes ever more so when
another heart is in the middle of your life.

I struggled for years....Fortunately for me,
I had a lady in my life that saw the good
part of me,  that watched me grow to become
a far better man.  And that reward has been
the greatest blessing to me.  I try to never
forget that...  I am far from a perfect man,
just a better one than I was once.

I enjoyed this poem...I guess cause I relate
to it well.

thank you.

There are always TWO sides to any story - don't beat yourself up over something that is NOT all your fault! Excellent, but painful write....

Don't it always seem to go?

To lose at love is one of the greatest heartaches.  Life goes on, but I don't
think we ever truly let go, we just tuck
it away for safe keeping.

It is sad, but you're not alone.

Anyway, nice writing.

Your words touched me deeply. Love can be as fragile as a hummingbird egg, or as strong as an ostrich egg. It's usually a little of both. The love nest is still there, but all you see are shattered shells, wanting to be whole again.

I have to agree with deVine on this one. . . there are always two sides. . . and it's never the fault of any one person. . .

well done. . .

This is about my marriage ???
THIS IS about my marriage.......
Really I think this is where almost, if not all relationships end up , in the long run !
Even though none of us want them to, and even near the end.... we think we'd do ANYTHING to get back what we once had with the Who , that used to be the Only true love of our life....... Sad......but a beautiful poem ...... Thanks

This has me thinking of last night when I went to the movies "Bread and Tulips" a wonderful story of people falling in love and as I walked from the theatre I was suprised to see my old girlfriend walking out of the same theatre with a new boyfriend...she headed for the womens restroom..he headed for the mens...and I headed for the front door...thinking isn't life like that sometime...James

Our lives are brief, a fleeting mist, a vapor, one day poof!  We're gone. Only a few things outlive us...our words, our children....and those we made a difference for.  Sometimes that means more than succeeding, if we feel we've not done that.
Sometimes we feel we've tried and tried and it's been to no avail.  But you know what?
No one who loves, loves in vain.
No one. We have to love ourselves first
before we can truly be happy. No one can make us happy. They only add to it......

So sad, but beautifully written...It's sad when we realize way too late how we have treated someone else! Hope all goes well

Thank you all very much for your replies and views on this type of situation.  I know there are two sides to every story and that no one can make you happy.  These things, however, don't mean you can't regret some of the mistakes you made to contribute to the situation.  This was by no means entirely my fault, but I do accept my share of the responsibility.  I just thought it was something people could relate to so they'd know they are not alone out there even though it seems that way at times.  Thanks again.
