The Shores of Alone

0 posted 2001-11-04 09:09 AM

This is more of a prose type writing, or free form poetry, not sure. Feel free, any moderator, to bump it to prose if thats where it belongs.
Written on my 8 hour bus trip yesterday.

She sat alone, the antique sofa
ignored in the corner, no one to sit with her.
Her purple velvet was soft, rich, inviting, sagging just a touch in the center
She stood royally on her carved legs, fluffing up like a kitten when someone passed by.
They never stopped.
There was delicate lace draped over her arm
she felt so pretty
but lonely.
Days passed, time placed her in her second new century
She was traded to other stores, for smaller
more petite, younger models.
And she remained alone.
One day, a tall old woman with cascading white hair stopped to stroke her gently
The sofa nearly swooned with delight, the joy of feeling a tender touch again.
So different from the rough way she had been handled by those who shuttled her around.
The woman smiled and asked permission to sit.
She stretched her tired legs across the long expanse of the sofa, with room to spare. As she did, she sighed, and said "where have you been all my life".
The sofa inwardly blinked..she thought she had been right here all along.
The woman brushed the dust lovingly off the sofa, and told the owner "she is coming home with me".
He looked at her in amazement, wondering why she would want that old thing, full of dents of past lives. The sofa flattened as she heard his thoughts. But then she heard the womans strong voice say "I want her-she has persevered, as I have".
And so they went home together
and lived happily for the remainder of their days
together-with their memories.

This left me smiling like after a good story read to me in my youth.  I really like your venture here, Sandra, and would gladly read more of your stories.  In fact, this could be a great start to a series -- it has left me curious to konw more, both about the old lady and about the history of the sofa.  You told this with fine detail and soft emotion.  Very well done!  I eagerly await the next installment.

Yes Sandra....even the Model T of furniture
still has a place in life....You have done
superbly with this.  I felt as though I was
there, the sofa....waiting.

Eight hours on a bus, bet your bottom was dreaming of a sofa like this.  Great poem, Sandra...a sofa with an old soul does sound comforting.

The finer things in life are aged maybe not so much to perfection but they are loaded with character, and it takes a sharp eye to appreciate the craftmanship and the beauty in which it is made of.

This was priceless Sandra, nice going!!

I love this Sandra. I love antiques, and would happily furnish my whole house with them if I could. I could picture myself as the lady in your story, taking the sofa home to live out the rest of my days in comfort.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

Well, let's keep this going....I enjoyed it.
Sandra, that sofa and I have a lot in common!
We're both antiques. (I'm trying hard to make myself laugh today

Charming, simply charming. We have quite a few antique pieces in our home, and I have often wondered if they just might feel in their wooden or overstuffed hearts, a little twinge of gratitude for having been saved from the dampness of a flea market barn. Well done. Chris
