Speaking From The Dust Reverently I turn each page with joy upon my face I close my eyes to this new age and fly through darkest space To another time going back I learn of people there History of the land I track making legal and fair During my study of the laws I found a burning fire Written in dusty books the cause visions they did inspire Our lost world of the living past now speaking from the dust This new world opening so vast to search them out I must Recorded clearly were these names the King did grant with lands In order listed who had claims passed from father to son's hands Craving to know of what they thought and how they lived their lives What things settlers bartered or bought what was it like for wives What beliefs were taught in those days and what laws were discussed I want to understand their ways to know if life was just I breathe the ancient leather smell revering the old script And feel the pull of magic spell under it's call I slipped A Law Library on the coast into the past took me So I sit among long dead ghosts and read with intense glee Karen Torbiak 2001© Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams. |

sometimes the best lessons are learned without books and without dust, now where do you find a place with no dust! ![]() |

Sunshine....thank you. I love history and learning about how people used to live. I am glad you liked it. ![]() Robert A....I agree..there are many lessons we learn without the use of books. In this case the lessons had to do with the law and how it affected peoples lives. ![]() Gentle Spirit....I seem to have a thirst for knowledge about our past. I love to learn how people once lived. ![]() BluesSerenade....This poem was inspired from the time when I was studying to become a Paralegal. I loved to get lost in the Law Library in New Brunswick, researching land titles. It is amazing how much you can find out about people from those dusty old records. ![]() Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams. |

Interloper....Yes most of Canada does adhere to the British Common Law. Quebec however does not. Quebec adheres to Civil Law. Quebec's civil law dates back to the Roman Empire, and reflects many of the precepts of French law. I am glad you enjoyed this poem. ![]() Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams. |

If I have to go to the court house to look up anything I try to either go early in the morning knowing I will get side tracked 20 times reading of past records or the last thing in the afternoon so I don't have time too. I loved you poem because now I know I have company in my searching. Dan Death comes not when we cease to breathe, but when we cease to dream. |
