All I Have

I held a love once,
it's warmth filled me to overflow.
Young, the both of us full of heart.
I recall each memory made,
as he pushed me on the hillside swing,
swam with me holding on, guarding me,
dancing so close, we blanketed one another
in comfort.

Years passed, and we grew as one,
same likes, same friends, always together
building a life of happiness. We got through Viet Nam,
deaths of  loved ones,  moved only three times in 31 years.
One time, only a mile from the last, because we wanted to
bring back to life, something crumbling, an old house
deserving of another chance to show off it's beauty.

And so we painted it with rainbow thoughts,
filled the gardens with everlasting love,
raised a pond to grace the corner ...
and then we enclosed ourselves within the walls,
expecting happiness to last. Somehow we failed.
Somewhere the strength of our togetherness
began to fade.

No one's fault, somewhere the pulls and needs
and wants and desires became twisted,
strangling each other until they frayed enough
to disintegrate one of the finest loves
ever imagined. It is lost now.
Nothing can ever bring back those glorious,
flowering days, when a single blossom
inspired a smile from my lips,
a kiss from my heart, a gentle touch
of fingers enclosing upon one another,
two, walking hand in hand, making it
in a world where most don't.

Each day that brings me heartache,
brings me a memory after, to sustain my life.
My home still stands, the crumbling repaired,
while the opposite has happened to my world...
and there are no second chances here.
But I am grateful I have had those years,
years that most others will never reach
or have a chance to feel
and although his words often try
to dissolve these memories,
I will not let them be torn from me,
as they are all I have...

"The worst prison would be a closed heart".
...Pope John Paul II

You write your thoughts so eloquently Wynter. Wonderful memories, and I hope that on the new path your life takes, that it will bring you new memories and experiences to cherish

Sometimes memories are all we have to hang on to. I know this feeling very well. Thank you for sharing this.

Very truly it feels good to hold on to those memories. And it does hurt when another tries to take those feeligns away, but HOLD ON to them, they are what keep us going.
*BIG HUG* I really enjoyed this.

I thank you all for reading words of mine when I least expect them to be...sometimes  I think I may be holding onto the wrong things in life.
