Pocket Change
~~~
At the Donut shop
before the dawn
a faceless vagrant
too
is drawn
He rifles through unwanted trash
with a careless glance
as I go past
~
A busy spot
both day and night
with drive through line
a constant sight
Fresh donuts
for the paying crowd
what's left ...
attracts those not so proud
~
Once inside the busy shop
with fresh brewed coffee
from simmering pot
Aroma savored before I taste
and not one drop
will go to waste
~
I relax to shake the morning chill
as thunder
and lightning
break the still
Sheets of rain now drive him in
near dripping wet
with a hapless grin
~
Can I help you Sir ?
the clerk's hollow tone
then time stood silent ...
with a heartless moan
This challenge answered
through my reply
my nod ...
I'd catch the bill
and buy
~
He sat protracting
every sip
watching rain beat at the door
I ordered one to go
and left ...
enough to pay
for four
~~~

Certainly very kind of you.  Thought-provoking

It does me good to see the good ones from the Archives breathe a breath of fresh air...especially when they comingle with drifts of coffee and donuts, common sense and courtesies...

Yes, "there but for the grace of God go you or I." Very nice. Chris

Ahhh, this is so touching!  I just love it when people practice random acts of kindness.  Great write by someone from my hometown, too!!

Dang, Rex!  I just got rid of Balladeer with my last poem, and now you gotta post this most excellent story!  Gimme some breathing room to relish my victory, will ya?!

I really like this poem you've penned.  Excellent story, and a good clean end, which is not so easy to do.

Sunshine ... thanks for re-reading always a pleasure to hear from you

faterider ... thankyou, I'm sure he did

Nightshade ... to be sure

Nancy ... I guess I'm a softy ... I've always been kind to street people ... and it's only 'Pocket Change'

Thanks LJ ... I've been watching the two of you for quite some time and I must say, I get a lot of chuckles ... you're both good writers and this place couldn't 'Tic' without you
