Made Redundant

Something’s gone rotten with August,
I wish for its quick passing
into September;
in the small circle of the day-to-day,
I find myself surrounded by women’s tragedies;
the eventual downsizing of middle-aged
accountants made obsolete,
each with their own sad tale;
the mild mannered Rogna
with a wickedly funny underbelly
who was busy
burying her husband
when the layoff notice came
via that miracle of technology –
the cell phone;
and sharp-eyed Kerri,
whose husband is dying of cancer,
she’s faced with the irony
of hoping her health insurance
will outlast him;
Linda – who’s tough exterior
belies the big old heart inside –
she’s got three kids to raise
and an EX that only pays
three hundred bucks a month;
and Monica,
who still has a job
(for now),
but she isn’t there much
since her daughter was hit by a car
while jaywalking last week,
and lies in a coma because
her brain shook so hard
from the impact of the car
that bits of it have separated
from her cranium;
and the company,
it doesn’t give a damn,
and that shouldn’t surprise me
after all these years,
but it does,
it does.

Sometimes 'day to day' reality leaves us wishing for the possibilities of tomorrow.  In the meantime, we write through life...as you have done so well.

Cor,
You always draw me in. I hope you're well, lady.   I love this, and I too wish for the coming of September. Those sort of thoughts seem to be going around right now between a lot of people.

I understand this...unfortunately...and although differenct circumstances you express the frustration and anger and helplessness of ANY SYSTEM that seems to forget the humanity behind the files of information and legal mumbo jumbo. Hugs for this one, Corinne.

Few companies give a damn. Valued employees are a dime a dozen and their personal tragedies an interruption of business, life a liability. Sorry those around you are suffering hopefully the ill tide will withdraw.

Thank you all for your thoughts and concerns.
I didn't really want to put this down on paper, but sometimes you just have to.

A footnote: Monica's daughter passed away this morning - she was 13 years old.
