I see them as acorns Little compact trees That haven't burst open Into the world just yet A prize, a token of what is meant to be. Even if their outer shell Is tough to break into The inside is still soft Woe is the heart of Heavy. As moss grows Around the edges Of their world. They sometimes lay Lifeless, drying in the sun. Others are gathered up By society and eaten On a cold day. Some fall into the stream Set adrift in aspiration Braving the rapids, bobbing Only to end up in the sea Of hopelessness Babbling about a brook They naively thought was Harmless. And we laugh At their efforts, scold Them for being somewhere They don't belong. Others fall very close To their mother tree. Depending on the strength Of her source, if no blight Has poisoned her, she can Shade the growth of her Acorns. She can lend to them The same soil she grew in. But at times, the blind Squirrels come to harvest And they always find at least One, meeting a crisis, a weakness To feed their needs. The mother tree cries, for she Can only bend so far Even in tempest winds Even when the little acorns Test life. In their depression of trying but failing They toe the line alongside the road Threatening to roll in front of trucks We know not of their plight Of desperation, or we sometimes just swerve around. Thinking they are just Careless, stupid, and trivial Until one meets the end Before it ever becomes a tree |

May they all grow into well-loved and respected trees! -MVS "It's all in the details -- the Big Picture always takes care of itself." |

Your replies keep me going, even when I fall into confusion and disheartenment. This subject is such a calling anguish for me. Children and their struggles. I hope you all can bear with me as I touch upon it in my verse from time to time. I sincerely thank you for your support and encouragement. Highest regards Regina |
