Wild Celeste Celeste was always wild. She swore and drank by the time we were eleven; I warned her that if she kept this up, she'd go to H-E-double-hockey sticks. Her mother was a teacher. She once told me that Celeste had been a surprise. Her name was Ruth. When she wasn’t teaching or being a Mom, Ruth collected seashells. She had a cottage behind the house filled with them, tagged and tucked into clear, plastic boxes. Her father was strict, a retired marine or something, with very short hair and large arms. He delivered Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper to restaurants and stores around town. In the summer, he usually came home for lunch. If we saw his truck parked out front, we’d go eat ice cream or drink Green Rivers at the ‘Scream Queen instead. We went there a lot. We lived near the beach. I guess they didn’t want Celeste to bring sand in the house, because they put in an outdoor shower and made her wash up outside. I thought it was pretty neat, except it didn’t have hot water; Celeste hated it. She had to shower naked in the yard, but Celeste didn’t care about that part, she liked to show off her boobs. Celeste had boobs before I did. We didn’t worry much about sand in my house. When Celeste was fourteen, she got caught “joy riding” in a stolen car. She blamed me, said I ratted on her, but I didn’t even know about it until after it happened. We weren’t friends after that. I heard about the shooting from my Mother. Celeste had snuck a boy in her bedroom, her Father found out, grabbed his gun and shot the boy in the leg. He got six years in prison. Celeste moved away. I wonder where she is now. © 2001 Corinne Bailey [This message has been edited by Corinne (edited 08-22-2001).] |

very nicely told.... the story line holds the readers attention pulling from one line to another and in the end..leaves us too wondering where she is now..and what the rest of the story is... I enjoyed |

as I've said before. . . you pull the most interesting characters out of your life. . . and share them here with all of us. . . ![]() wonderfully done. . . --------------------------------------------------------- To the world, you may only be one person. But to one person, you may be the world. |
