Last Hours Virginia Salter How long will your last hours haunt me and yet somehow I shant want forget for all the moments I had to share with you are precious for no more this side of heaven will I have met Your scream, in pain, “What are you trying to do to me!” when attempt was made to roll you on your side, to feed or give drink from beside you was so terribly unsuccessful, though I tried The rale of death, how it does echo in the very sinew of my being your arms flailing as if your air was being swallowed by some monstrous creature we weren’t seeing Trying to speak to you, came no answer, only cries of pain that we should be so cruel lifting you to strive for your comfort when there really seemed quite nothing we could do Realization your last moments were coming their imminence so vivid and foreseen I began “In the Garden” as a prayer for your soul, through your mind, did I sing As I sang the last words in my memory you gave up the ghost before my very eyes a vapor arose from your forehead as release of your life filled my sighs So final those minutes of your going no recanting all words said as rain how often had words gone out in loving were they enough to ease an ounce of our pain © August 30. 2000 |
