~Bridge To Yesterday~ centuries ago in Bermuda 1620 to be precise they built the world's smallest drawbridge twenty-two inches of space would suffice Somerset Bridge, as it is called, connects Somerset Island to Mainland when a vessel approaches, a passer-by will raise the bridge by hand it's opening, a single plank will clear a sailboat's mast traffic light signals right-of-way till boat is safely past to the west there's Elys Harbour to the east is the Great Sound blessed is a heavenly place on earth where such beauty can be found the next time you visit Bermuda take a jaunt across the isle experience a piece of history step back in time for awhile ~vlraynes The original Somerset Bridge, was one of the first three bridges built in Bermuda in the 17th century. It remained operational until just a few years ago, when it was rebuilt and it's mechanics were modernized. Isn't it delightful to come across a word or a site of historical reference and turn around, dig out "more" stuff, and then compose something of this making? I have a close friend who likes to "research" stuff, I think I shall ask her to post an old favorite of hers.... Well done Vicki...Very well done! |
