Where the Bears Are Up to a northern lake we went To find a spot to pitch our tent. We found the perfect camping place. The water but a little pace. As evening fell, we were aware That there were many bears out there! Saw hulking shapes in brown and black And wondered if they would attack! We hung a lantern overhead, Stowed all our gear, prepared for bed, But very soon we knew that we Had some unwanted company. We heard the padding of big feet And knew we were about to meet These denizens of northern woods, Equivalent to city hoods, Who steal and pillage as they please. I pled with them on bended knees. I showed I.D. and gave my name, But they still ate me just the same! Betty Lou Hebert [This message has been edited by Trillium (edited 07-27-2001).] |

Thank you everyone for your replies. My family had a very scary experience with bears at a lake near the Canadian border, a couple of years ago. We were only one of three groups camping in the park and the bears drove us all out. For the size of them, they are amazingly quiet. They can sneak up on you and you never hear them until you turn around and you are nose to nose. It was September and the berry crops had failed that year so they were hungry. The memories are still vivid! Betty Lou Hebert |
