a poem by Wayne Adams titled "Flower Child" that can be read at www.voy.com/1001, hope you'll pop in to see it. Virginia Salter Cool as a cucumber calm as a sloth wild as a weasel free as a moth analogies, similes metaphors grow words say so many things-- more than you know. In the days of Grandma and Grandpa it was “Twenty-three skidoo” when wanting to say something finer to you. Then when Mama and Papa were growing up well, things were neato and wonderful, it was easy to tell. I’ve gone through the stages, so many by now I can barely recall them they’ve been radical, wow! Like “far out” and “groovy” “cool” and “real nice” Sometimes something that’s been said causes one to think twice. Like “rad” and “slammin’” even “*****in” and “bad” are words that are good-things yet sounding so sad. I wonder how far the pendulum will swing till the words come back to the real that they mean. Things are so bogus, so far from the truth do you think we will ever say things like forsooth? Have you pondered the trips that our language has taken do you think it will ever be cured like bacon? © June 2, 2001 |
