I used to believe I could levitate.
I would call my parents to watch and wait
As I showed off, skipping across the yard,
Convinced I could fly if I tried real hard.
I swear I often soared above the ground
But never when witnesses were around.
Then years embedded my soul in concrete
I could barely move, much less jump to greet
Purple martins dancing in a blue sky
And ambition to be a butterfly
Became only a distant memory
As I curled in a ball of misery.
And with my back pressed up against the wall
The only support preventing a fall
Into the blackness always beckoning me,
I lived in uneasy proximity
To a chasm waiting my one misstep -
I cried for assistance; there was no help.
Chains bound my ankles, crushing flesh and bone
I was mocked with failures; joy was long gone
I pretended hope but despaired to find
Relief from the chaos of my own mind.
But then your love emerged, a warming sun.
In pitiful parody of a run
I hurried to your protective embrace
And saw acceptance of me on your face.

To my apprehensions, I say goodbye
And with your hand in mine, at last, I fly.

suthern

something in your words sang to me...
maybe because I've hunkered down on
a wall next to you.
Fly...little 3 letter word that
says freedom.

I am agoraphobic and sometimes do
so long to fly.
Thank you for sharing this poem.

Sometimes the pityful parody of a run matters not so much as the hand awaiting us.  Enjoyed the passing of time and experience this spoke of.  And finally...the reward!

SweetSuthernGal~
This is just sooooooo beautifully written.
Each line with wings, waiting to fly ...
and then she does ........~

So very lovely.  So deeply felt.

Love the mention of 'purple martins' ...

Ruth..Yes, you can fly...your words always do, even when sad..they fly on the wings of a poet, and are beautiful!

We are all butterflies waiting to happen Ruthie...
some of us just take longer to get our wings.
Your cadence on this floats like a butterfly...it always does...as its one of your pens many gifts...another being..your ability to emote and evoke emotion with such
impact and power.
And we can always relate and see our selves in your words.
very well done poetess girlie-girl.

I'm hanging on your every word

listening to you breathe

In my dreams I am often a bird, flying high in the sky, searching for some magical cloud upon which to land, so that I may have a birds-eye-view of humanity. This poem has an ethereal quality to it, with overtones of sadness and joy flying wing-to-wing. Thanks for sharing such wonderful imagery.

Decaflame: Then you know how much I hoped I hadn't laid an egg with the telling. *G* Thank you so much for that marvelous! *G*

TheLadyPoet: What a wonderful comment... thank you so very much! If we were at that wall simultaneously, I wish we'd known. *S* The companionship would have been welcome. And that reminds me... welcome to Passions! *S*

JLR: You're right... When your goal is in sight, form really doesn't matter. *S*  Stumble, lurch or crawl...just get there! *S* Thank you!

Marge: Sweet lady, you are so very kind... and I thank you sincerely! *S* I do love martins... even when I'm hanging clothes out to dry on a line too near their nest and being dive-bombed! *G*

Sven: I KNOW I succeeded... more than once! *G* But only my cats were there to see... and they weren't telling. *G* Thank you very much! *S*

Irish Rose: Would you believe I always felt sorry for Nana, left behind, fretting and worrying? *G* Thank you for reading!

Martie: You dear... I can't tell you how much I appreciate the way you always see beauty even in my sad words... I can only thank you very much! *S*

Janet Marie: Naw... *G* I will gladly accept (and relish! *G*) the compliment of floating cadence, but I'll never be a butterfly. *S* But that's okay... I have more than a season of love to give if someone can accept less color, beauty, and grace in exchange for more substance (and flapping... though that might be jaws, not wings! LOL.) Thank you so much... my pen sure does appreciate your unwavering support of its offerings. *S*

Midnitesun: I thank you so much for a wonderful comment... especially considering that even your name shares imagery! *S* Welcome to Passions! *S*

ethome: Dern it all! LOL. And here I had the kleenex and TLC all ready for dispensing. *G* Thank you so much, kind sir. *S* Resurrection is an ongoing process... thank you for enjoying this episode. *S*

hoot: Dear lady, I simply followed your magnificent example. *S* Thank you very much... it's so good to have you back! *S*

from:
I could barely move, much less jump to greet
Purple martins dancing in a blue sky
to this:
I lived in uneasy proximity
To a chasm waiting my one misstep -
to this
To my apprehensions, I say goodbye
