Rose Petals (formerly=The Rose is as Life)

Rose Petals
Virginia Salter

layer upon layer
of ardent beauty
scented with sweetness
that wafts in and out

though a thorn may linger
here and there,
prickly and painful
in its touch,

though infection may come
as fungal or leaven
her wonder and grandness
can surely win out

as the leaves of living
pass through the years
the aromas are tender
and weave in sweet joys

each petal, its essence,
drifts on the wind
then falling to earth
it nurtures the land

just as one’s moments
spent in a lifetime
enrich the hearts
of all whom they touch
