Moonbeams filtering through twisted limbs,
festooned with moss, glowing in light so dim.
Reflecting off polished cypress knees,
clustered around century old trees.
Piroque drifting with  practiced ease,
through the bayou in nights breeze.

Speckled waters with moonlit glow,
hidden spots where the lilies grow.
The sound of the cat cries in the night,
or was it a woman in deadly fright.
Bulls-eye lantern with its feeble light,
showing eyes of red over to the right.

A mossy log drifting in waters brown,
turns to ‘gator sinking down.
The whirl of wings thunders close by,
as a brace of ducks take to the sky.
Peaceful and deadly these waters can be,
but like a drug, hauntingly call me.

What you call swamp...I would call bayous....perhaps, and only so, it is a little more romantic in sound....

for all you have written, draws one in....

Munda, thank you for your kind words. It is a beautiful and haunting place. Appreciate the read...gentle smile

Ahh LW, Glad you were able to take the trip with me then..Thank you for being here..gentle smile

Sigh, yes, Sissie, the bayou is in the body of the poem, the swamp in the heading, so I probably am guilty of a misnomer, but it is swamp where I live, bayou fifteen miles away across the line, but you are correct, I should have named it The Bayou...gentle smile

Spookedy!  But I can see the allure...I feel like I've experienced this swamp firsthand!

I can see a rich oil canvas painting with saturated colors of water, shafts of light, moonglow and such...  and I mean this literally -- this feels like a powerful description, not only of an actual scenario, but of a very well done oil painting...  in other words:  INCREDIBLE imagery!  Very rich, Logan.
