When Iambe met Tom

the Windy city met its name
the cold biting into her
and before she found her way to
the Auto Show,
she needed a warmth to enter her
bones

usually attuned to
alcoholic rest stops, she
turned instead into the
small coffee shop, and for a
moment, thought she
was recognized by Tom, the
way he looked up and
his face caught in frozen
memory

he said “have a seat?”
she dropped her knapsack and sat,
“do I know you?”

“No, but you use to.”

he ordered up a coffee like she
used to drink, heavy with Irish cream

Iambe sipped it for the first time

“do you still read McKuen?”

and she softly said, so as not to
shock him awake,

“not any more.  Did she ever dance?”

his great brown eyes blinked, slowly
teared, he blinked once more,
then in a husky voice, said

“then, you are
       too good
                to be true,”

the silence became a bond,

of two strangers

she sipped the hot coffee, laced with
his memories and
her Irish cream
and thought that the girl must have been
a lady who read McKuen softly

she watched as he fingered a copy of
coming close to the earth

he whispered “I marked my book
with the notations I put in hers,”

then he looked up at her again, his
tears now dry, and said “yes, she
danced very well.”

Iambe drained the coffee, grateful
for the creamy reminder of
somebody’s other times

stood up, and said

“she probably still reads McKuen.”

she thanked him for
the warmth

and left to see what she might find
at the Auto Show.

(chuckling)

Sounds like Iambe has evolved again...

Nicely told.... and an enjoyable read.

a wonderful storyteller you are.

An older Iambe, perhaps?
